Weekend seminar: Experience & explore the wonderful botanical diversity
Experience the wonderful botanical diversity and take a closer look at the fascinating world of lichens, mosses, ferns, flowering plants and trees in this multi-day seminar.
This three-day retreat in the Eifel region is all about biodiversity: In our hands-on workshop, you'll learn everything you need to know about the various plant groups, from lichens to flowering plants. With biologist Dr. Dorothee Killmann and lecturer Burkhard Leh, you'll explore various landscapes and habitats right on our doorstep, learning about the importance of forest ecosystems and aspects of nature conservation.
We'll focus specifically on the different plant groups. You'll find answers to questions like: What are lichens? What are mosses? What is the significance of ferns? How can we distinguish flowering plants and trees based on their characteristics and identify them using a book? Which plants have a special use for us? What indicator species are there? How do I use a magnifying glass and how do I work with identification books?
The seminar is aimed at interested botany beginners and offers the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills while meeting like-minded people. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the wonderful botanical biodiversity on our doorstep in a friendly and supportive environment.
Your course highlights:
- During the seminar weekend you will set your own plant diary that you can use as a permanent souvenir you can take home.
- After the seminar weekend you can exclusive group on our online platform (Wald-Lernen.de) with the two Experts Dorothee and Burkhard as well as other course graduates and post all your questions and discoveries there and thus also after the course to your Hone your skills and continue learning .
- You get a certificate about the successful completion of the course.
Seminar objective:
- You will learn how to recognize mosses and lichens in the field and identify them with the help of an identification key.
- You will learn about the different types of ferns and how they reproduce.
- You will learn how to distinguish flowering plants from one another using their flower color and flower shape.
- You will learn how to use a field guide and a hand-held magnifying glass.
- You will learn how to sharpen your powers of observation and identify plants with confidence.
- You will learn what substances plants contain and which species are edible - or even deadly poisonous.
- You will learn about the importance of plants for us and what we can learn from them.
Seminar times & content
- Friday: Lichens, Mosses & Ferns (Basic Knowledge & Excursion) 2-6 pm incl. Cake
- Saturday: Flowering plants & forest ecology (basic knowledge for identifying flowering plants & meadow and forest excursion) 10am-5pm including lunch
- Sunday: Trees & Shrubs & What We Can Learn from Plants (Basic knowledge for identifying woody plants & forest excursion) 10am-4pm including lunch
